Magmatic-hydrothermal ore forming processes: examples from Cu, Mo, and REE deposits

  The presentation will discuss some of the key characteristics of magmatic-hydrothermal ore forming processes and how we can study them.

Focus will be on general formation processes of Cu and Mo porphyries with examples from North and South America and a REE occurrence in Greenland.

Magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits are characterized by magmatic and hydrothermal processes that affect the metal concentration in an ore deposit. I will discuss the partitioning of metals between melt, mineral and fluids, their solubility, and the deposition of them.

    In-situ microanalytical techniques allow studying the composition of minerals, fluid and melt inclusions to unravel ore forming processes. I will show how laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA ICP-MS) can be used to analyse single fluid inclusions and derive the composition of ore-forming fluids. The presentation will also cover some fundamentals about LA ICP-MS applied to fluid inclusion and mineral composition research.
